Echoes of Devotion: The Story of Jalpesh Temple
Jalpesh Temple, an abode of Shiva, is located near Maynaguri in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal. It is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites for Shaivite devotees in North Bengal. The temple attracts devotees throughout the year, especially in the month of monsoon ( Shravan), when devotees take water from the Teesta River, walk barefoot for 12-14 kms and offer the holy water to Lord Shiva, believing they will attain Moksha.
According to the West Bengal Tourism Department, the temple was constructed around 800 CE by King Jalpesh, the last successor of King Baghadatta of the Naraka Dynasty. Today, the architecture of the temple reflects a unique mix of Bengali and North Indian Temple styles. The Bengali features can be seen in the curved roof forms, whereas the distinct Garbhagriha and a superstructure over the shrine reflect North Indian style.
However, this architecture is the result of successive rebuilding. It is believed that Bakhtiyar Khilji desecrated the Jalpesh Temple in Jalpaiguri during his invasion of Kamrup. It was restored by a Bhutanese King; however, it was lost beneath dense forest. In 1665, King Prannarayan of Cooch Behar excavated the temple and re-established it. Once again, it suffered cracks from an earthquake, for which renovations were made.

- Options - private cab/taxi or NBSTC Buses ( free for women passengers ) from Bagdogra to Sevoke Road, then Sevoke Road to Maynaguri.
- Total distance - approx.70-75 kms.
- Total time: 2.5 - 3 hours, depending on the traffic and the mode of transportation used ( private taxi takes less time, public buses take more time )
- The temple is around 6 km from Maynaguri Town.
- From New Maynaguri Railway Station
- New Maynaguri Railway Station - Maynaguri - Jalpesh Temple
- Take an E-rickshaw ( locally called a Toto ), an auto or cab, or a public bus.
- After reaching Maynaguri Town, you may take an auto or E-Rickshaw ( locally called a Toto ) to Jalpesh Temple.
- Total distance - approx.12 kms
- Total time: 30-40 mins, depending on the traffic and mode of transportation used.
While there are two entry points to enter the temple premises, devotees are only allowed to use the designated entry and exit points manned by police. The primary reason for a single functional entry point is to manage peak rush during festivals. Sufficient parking space is also available just outside the temple, where buses, autos, cabs, and private vehicles can park.
Devotees can also find lodges and resorts to stay near the temple, snack stalls to eat, restaurants for proper meals, and transport services to the airport and railway station.
