The excavated Stone Age tools dating back 20,000 years ago have helped the scholars trace back the human occupation more than 8,000 years ago in Bengal. According to Indian epic Mahabharata, the then Bengal region was under the Vanga Kingdom. In the 16th century, Bengal came under the Mughal rule which survived until the rise of British Colonial rule. When India achieved freedom in 1947, Bengal was partitioned based on religious grounds, the eastern division went to the supremacy of Pakistan, and known as East Bengal, later renamed Bangladesh. The western division went to the supremacy of India, earning its name as West Bengal.
